February 2011 Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO Report

On February 17, 2011, the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO meeting was called to order. The recording secretary read a statement written by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on FY 2011 Budget proposal.

The Maryland State Senate Bill 660 was discussed. President Grecco talked about the Right to Work Bill sponsored by Senator Kittleman and how it was hazardous to working families in the State of Maryland!

The letter from Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to Commissioner Roger Goodell was discussed. The lockout of the NFL Players could be detrimental to the State economy and also for States with football teams across the United States of America.
The Maryland State and District of Columbia AFL-CIO Legislative “Scratch Sheet” for the 2011 Maryland State Senate and 2011 Maryland State House was discussed by Secretary-Treasurer Donna Edwards

Mark your calendars for the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO Unions and Maryland State and DC Building Trades Annual Night in Annapolis is Monday, March 21, 2011. Lawyer’s Mall (College Avenue at Rowe Boulevard) at 6:00 pm.

Mark your calendar, for the 2011 Cope Dinner, Tuesday, May 3 at Pimlico Race Track at 6:00 pm. The honorees are Sister Loretta Johnson, Executive Vice President of American Federation of Teachers and Brother Glen Middleton, Executive Director of American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees Council 67.

Mark your calendar for March 14, 2011. The Marylanders for Retirement Security are having a rally at 6:00 pm at Lawyer’s Mall in Annapolis where AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka will be the keynote speaker.

Mark your calendar for the next Young Trade Unionists General Meeting on March 1, 2011 at 7:00 pm. Where the guest speaker will be Joe Uehlein from Labor Network for Sustainability.

January 2011 Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO Report

On January 20, 2011 at 7:00 pm, the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO meeting was conducted. At this meeting President Grecco reported on a statement by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on Republican Attempts to Repeal Health Care.

It was also reported that the NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers) was conducting their annual food drive on May 14, 2011 in partnership with the AFL-CIO community services. On Saturday, May 14, 2011 they are asking all citizens to place a box or can of non-perishable food next to their mailbox before the letter carrier delivers mail. They have a goal of beating their last year record of 77.1 million pounds of food, which was collected in the one day drive.

State Battle updates were given. Bills that labor should be concerned about are Right to Work, Paycheck Deception, Attacks on Building Trades, Attacks on the Public Sector, Attacks on Immigrants, Anti-Prevailing Wage bills, and Attacks on Project Labor Agreements.

Annual Night in Annapolis will be held Monday, March 21, 2011 at Lawyer’s Mall. This can be found at the intersection of College Avenue & Rowe Boulevard. The rally starts at 6:00 pm

The Young Trade Unionists will have their next general meeting where their guest speaker will be Baltimore City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke on February 1, 2011 at 7:00 pm. The location is 2701 W. Patapsco Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21230
